An O-ring is a very versatile device which can solve many types of sealing problems, but their use must follow certain guidelines. O-rings are capable of many modes of failure, but for the most part these failure modes have solution methods that are well established.  The machining practice of the part (groove size, finishes, and clearances) are all equally as important as the elastomeric compound.
